What We Need From The Scene

When you have an accident, it is important to pull over to the side of the road and check if anyone is hurt. You must call the police and wait for them to arrive. Pictures from the scene of the accident are helpful to attorneys and so are names and telephone numbers of witnesses. The name, phone number, and insurance information of the person who caused the accident are also very important. You should also request a copy of the accident report when it becomes available. You should never take responsibility for an accident at the scene even if you think the crash was your fault. There may be some circumstances of which you are unaware. If you have already admitted fault for the crash, tell us when you come in for your consultation.

Documentation of Medical Bills

To get an accurate settlement from your insurance company, we will need to see copies of every medical bill that relates to your accident. This includes surgeries, follow-up appointments, physical therapy, and any alternative treatments you have had. You should save receipts for any  prescription or non-prescription medications you have taken due to your injuries. If you require psychiatric treatment because of the accident, you should save the therapy bills as well. Ask doctors and therapists to write you a report detailing your progress. You can also keep a journal about your general wellness after an accident.

Records of Lost Wages

If you get injured in a car accident, you are likely to need multiple medical appointments. Doctor’s visits mean hours missed from work and lost wages. Missing work can affect your ability to get promotions in the future. If you are unemployed, your injuries can affect your ability to look for a job and go to interviews. Ask your company’s HR specialist to write you a letter stating the number of hours that you have missed from work. If you are self-employed, you can write the letter yourself and use your tax records as proof of the amount of money you would have made, had you been able to work.

When to Call Your Insurance Company

You should contact your insurance company as soon as you can. You may want to call us before you call your insurer. When you call your insurance company for the first time, they will ask you some general questions and request that you send in your documentation. Georgia is a fault state when it comes to car accidents. This means that the person who is responsible for the accident is also responsible for its bills. Although you may not be the person responsible for an accident, you will call your insurer and they will call the other driver’s insurance company. Your insurance company may ask to record you, but you are under no obligation to let them. If you allow them to do this they may try to trip you up on tape. They may try to get you to answer questions about things you cannot remember. Insurance companies in Georgia must follow a timetable for each claim they receive.

  • 15 days to acknowledge the claim
  • 15 days to send a claimant paperwork to fill out
  • 15 days to accept or deny the claim. Or 30 days if no paperwork is required.
  • 10 days to pay the claim.

If they accept your claim, they will offer you a settlement amount but you should call us before you accept the settlement.
